Before quoting a bent part, identify the documented rolling direction on the parent sheet and relate every bend line to it. Record the material grade, delivery condition, thickness and required geometry alongside that orientation. Use recommendations for the actual material and setup; a generic grain-direction rule cannot approve a radius or prevent cracking. This guide helps buyers and fabricators exchange drawing information, not operate a press brake.

What does rolling direction mean on a drawing?
Rolling direction is the direction in which the material travelled through the rolling process. Describe the bend line as parallel, perpendicular or at a stated angle to that direction in a top view of the flat blank. Avoid the phrase “bend with the grain” by itself: specify which line and direction you mean.
SSAB distinguishes parallel and transverse bend lines in its special-steel guidance and describes different bendability conditions. Its recommended minimum punch radii are specific to its steel products. Those recommendations do not establish a common radius multiplier for stainless steel, aluminum or every Rucheng configuration.

Read the orientation of each bend line
This hypothetical top view uses one rolling-direction arrow and two perpendicular bend lines. B1 crosses the arrow; B2 runs parallel to it. The diagram defines orientation only. It supplies no dimensions, bend sequence, tooling approval or guaranteed result.

- B1: perpendicular
- B2: parallel
What changes when the nesting orientation changes?
Suppose a nesting revision rotates the part outline by 90° relative to the rolling direction of the parent sheet. B1 and B2 exchange their parallel/perpendicular relationship. Review both bends before approving the new layout. Turning an already-cut blank on the worktable moves the bend lines and its material direction together; it does not change their relationship.
| Bend identifier | Original layout | Layout rotated 90° | Required review |
|---|---|---|---|
| B1 | Perpendicular to rolling direction | Parallel to rolling direction | Check whether the material guidance and approved trial still cover the new orientation. |
| B2 | Parallel to rolling direction | Perpendicular to rolling direction | Review radius, tooling and finished requirements; the new orientation is not automatic acceptance. |
| Other bend lines | Record the actual angle | Recalculate the relative angle | Do not force an angled bend into a parallel/perpendicular category. |
How should direction information be verified?
Ask the material supplier what the delivery markings mean and retain the link between the parent sheet, cutting layout and blank identifier. If direction is undocumented, record it as unknown and obtain an application review before relying on a direction-dependent recommendation. A photograph, the longest edge or a surface texture alone is not the required traceability record.
Record the required cosmetic finish direction separately. Outokumpu describes rolling and finishing operations such as grinding and brushing as different processing stages. The procurement implication is to ask the supplier how a finish or protective-film arrow relates to rolling direction for the specific supplied product, rather than assign that meaning yourself.

A supplier-ready orientation review record
- Material: grade, delivery condition or temper, thickness, batch/parent-sheet identifier and source of rolling-direction information.
- Drawing: revision, blank identifier, direction arrow, every bend identifier, required angle, inside radius and finished tolerance.
- Configuration: bend method, machine and tooling identifiers, support and clearance checks, and applicable component load limits.
- Evidence: material guidance with its conditions, representative trial identity, agreed inspection method and acceptance decision.
- Changes: retain the prior layout and identify nesting rotation, material substitution, tooling change or other revision that needs review.
What should accompany the press brake inquiry?
Send Rucheng the marked flat pattern and finished drawing, material information, bending length, tolerances, visible-face requirements and production mix. Identify unknowns explicitly. Ask for an itemized machine/tooling proposal and the conditions under which representative parts will be evaluated. Keep material bendability, equipment capacity and cosmetic acceptance as separate checks.

Can I identify rolling direction from a brushed finish?
Do not treat appearance alone as proof. Ask the supplier to explain the marking or finish direction for the delivered product and retain that evidence with the blank record.
Can every bend on a box cross the rolling direction?
Perpendicular bend lines cannot both be perpendicular to one rolling direction. Review each bend separately with the applicable material guidance and required geometry.
Does rotating the blank at the press brake improve its material orientation?
Rotating the same cut blank moves its bend lines and rolling direction together. A different nesting orientation on the parent sheet changes that relationship and needs a new review.
